Owls (and other birds) eat their prey whole, but can't digest every single bit of the animal they've just eaten! Their digestive system separates the undigestible bits and later on, the owl coughs up a pellet of that undigested material! Because this material hasn't gotten very far, when you dissect a pellet, you can easily recognize which parts didn't make it to the owl's stomach! Bones, feathers, and fur remain recognizable so you can see what that owl's been eating!
Kinda gross, but really cool!
